Virginia Union University freshman Danielle Ferguson and VUU women's head coach Barvenia Wooten-Cherry have been named the CIAA Freshman of the Week and the CIAA Women's Basketball Coach of the Week, respctively, the CIAA announced on Monday, January 30.

Ferguson, a 6-0 freshman forward from Woodbridge, Va., scored a career-high 23 points to lead Virginia Union to a 59-48 upset
win over Virginia State University on January 26. The win marked the first time the Lady Panthers had defeated VSU in six years. 

Coach Wooten-Cherry guided VUU to wins over Virginia State and Chowan, and has the Lady Panthers in first place in the Northern Division of the CIAA. Those wins marked the first time a Lady Panther squad had defeated a VSU team in six years, and the first defeat over Chowan in five years. 

It marked the first time Coach Wooten-Cherry has been selected as the CIAA Women's Basketball Coach of the Week.
